Mindset Mondays: Fearless About Salary

Many of you reading this will want to crawl back under your doona at the mere thought of having to advocate for yourself re: salary.

I get it. It’s tied to so many freaking emotions.

Worthiness. Greed. Fear. Anxiety. Anger. [Insert your emotion here].

I could sing from the rooftops “it’s just a conversation and it’s not personal” but let’s be honest, it certainly feels personal.

Not getting the financial recognition for the outputs and effort you put in is crushing so in the spirit of un-crushing your spirit...

...let’s talk through 3 quick tips to get your mindset ready for the big talk.

Visualise Success:

Athletes train in this skill because it works.  Take a deep breath, close your eyes and see yourself confidently chatting through your accomplishments, KPI’s and value add.

It’s crazy how often you’ll see the worst outcome happening (i.e. you anticipate the negative way your boss will talk to you or you just “know” they won’t give you what you want) and when you do that, you attract that exact “worst outcome” to happen!

Stop doing that ladies, it’s a salary killer.  Be a corporate athlete instead.

Committed, but not attached:

If you’re a student in my Career Accelerator or Leadership Accelerator program you’ll most likely have heard me say this phrase.

In short, it means go into the conversation with everything you have.  Prepare like a MOFO.  Share those accomplishments. Benchmark your salary for market value.  Just don’t be attached to any particular outcome.

Taking away the pressure can be pure magic for your mindset.

Win/Win Baby:

The best mindset hack I use is the “win/win” strategy.  Simply knowing that you are the winner regardless of the outcome is crazy cool.

Here’s the thing.  You may get your pay rise this time, you may not.  But the ball is in your court because you have CHOICE.  I have capitalised the word “choice” because it’s important.

You can choose to stay at the company, take on the feedback and have another crack at the discussion OR you can choose to find another company that pays you what you’re worth.  That's the win/win for you.

If there was a magic wand to make you feel amazing at these conversations I would wave it all over you.  Until then, it’s time to work on your mindset!
