Work Christmas Parties Gone Wrong.

career christmas party dream job workshop Dec 11, 2023

I’ve been in HR long enough to know that even the most professional, most skilled, and most valued employees can get unhinged this time of year.

I’ve seen it all. Bosses getting extra friendly with their team, police lock-ups, firings, outfits that would make Lady Gaga raise her eyebrows, infidelity, and much more.

While HR confidentiality holds me back, here’s a story from one of our readers:

A prankster in my office snuck onto the Christmas Party organiser's PC and sent just me an email that the already organised party was now going to be fancy dress Star Wars themed. I did some serious grunt work to try and pull off the most amazing Star Wars outfit I could think of. After all, why not go the extra mile this time of year? The outcome, transformed into a Wookie.

The only problem: I was the only one he sent the email to, so I was the only one dressed up...

Devastated… Embarrassed… Mortified… Angry.

I was also the manager of the business and instantly contemplated firing him on the spot.

Better yet, I owned it!

I switched a light on and told people I was willing to make a fool of myself if it meant we could all let our hair down just a bit extra.

And the night was great!

I’m still plotting revenge, but fun revenge.

So, this week, your mindset should be to have fun (you deserve it; it’s been a long year), and:

If you’re going to make headlines, do it for all the right reasons.

But, don’t get fired.

The rest is fair game 🙂
