Want to leave but...

career dream job workshop job resign work workshop Jan 30, 2024

There’s an internal battle (and a bucketload of fear) when deciding to leave your job, even when your current one doesn’t suit you anymore.

Fear of the unknown, fear of letting people down and fear of making the wrong decision is huge.

What if my new job or manager is worse than the current one?  What if I make a mistake and lose my job?  What if I oversell myself and can’t live up to their expectations?  What if my new workplace culture is toxic?

On top of that, you have your internal battle of feeling guilty about leaving, disappointing people, being judged, ensuring you don’t go down in pay, and the feeling of job scarcity in your field.

No wonder it’s hard to muster up the courage to leave.

Your comfort zone, albeit restrictive, offers you a sense of stability that is like an addictive drug.  You give yourself reasons and excuses that make sense to stay.

It’s safer.  But you’re not fulfilled, are you?

It’s time for mindset detox ladies and you can start with this mantra:

“It’s ok and safe for me to leave my job”.

I give you permission.  I give you permission to find a job that is empowering, challenging, flexible, higher-paying, fun, a step up, a different direction - yes even a totally new one!

If your current job doesn’t fill your needs, it’s ok to leave.  Seriously.

In order for you to know that it truly is safe, you’ll need to follow the below path:

1) Deciding what’s next:

This is a simple but powerful exercise of saying what you really need in a job, and what you are not willing to compromise in your life.

For example, “I need a promotion to X position, I need $X income, I need a company that supports my progress. However, I am not willing to work overtime or weekends, I am not willing to work for a boss that doesn’t value me, I am not willing to come into the office more than 3 days a week.

This will be different for everyone, and you need to be clear on your needs that are unique to you.

2) Find multiple jobs:

If you have multiple jobs that you can apply for, that meet your requirements, it means you won’t be that person who’s hanging their entire life on that one job.  It’s devastating if you don’t get it, it'll erode your confidence.  There are many opportunities that will be available to you.  Now, finding multiple jobs to apply for may be easy for some, but not everyone - which may require more creative ways to find them.

3) Resume / Interview preparation:

Long gone are the days where you can submit a resume which your friend, college or (gosh forbit) your parents taught you how to write. The same goes for interviews. There are many tools that can help you in these areas, some much better than others, but “winging” it won’t get you where you need to go these days.

Keep reading below, I will talk to Resumes in 2024 plus I’ll cover this in my FREE workshop, as well as how to best prepare yourself for the job market.

4) Interview them:

How do you know if you are going into a new work environment that will ultimately meet all your needs? You need to ask some great questions of your potential new employer that tell you what work conditions will be like.  Don’t be afraid to ask these questions so you have confidence you aren’t walking into another setback.

The main thing, you need to take each step with the right level of focus, because once you solve each step you'll find a new level of confidence to go for what you really want, and you’ll feel less worried about making the wrong decision.  And you'll feel FREEDOM!

FREE WORKSHOP: Your Dream Job in 2024

This week I’m hosting a live workshop called “Your Dream Job in 2024”.

During the workshop I talk through the most important aspects of applying for jobs in 2024, including:

  1. Identifying the key criteria that makes up your dream job - your personal career blueprint!
  2. How to make your dream job possible, and creating a top 1% candidate resume
  3. How to excel in interviews; and what you need to do to feel confidence walking into the interview, your ability to get the job and what you bring to their business.

Fundamentally, it’s about connecting with what you really want from your career in 2024, and personal life, and doing it with confidence.

I don’t run these workshops as much anymore, so if you really are serious about changing careers this year then don’t wait for the next one!
