She's SO old...

age leadership old team Nov 08, 2023

Did you know, 1 in 2 people are ageist against older people, according to the World Health Organisation.

This blew me away!

If you're over 40, you've probably already started feeling the "to old" vibes. But also, if you're under 40, you're probably starting to feel the "too young" vibes.

This is a real problem, because you'll feel like decisions are being made about you that aren't reflective of your skill, experience or capability.

These assumptions do a disservice to the unique talents and skills of individuals, regardless of their age.

Don't be afraid to speak up about ageism when you see or feel it, even if it's awkward. Sometimes people aren't aware, or they thinks playful, but for many of us it's not. So respectfully stick up for yourself and stop it before it gets worse.

Embrace the strengths and experiences that are unique to you! Be proud of what you bring to the table, and don't be afraid to share why these work for you and how they might work for others - others will respect you more if they understand you better.

And don't be afraid if others have better ideas, it keeps us developing. As soon as we close ourselves off to others, we stop learning new approaches.

If you're a leader, I'm talking to you...

Take the time to understand your team, what biases they feel, and try to uncover if you've developed unconscious biases yourself.

As soon as you know, make it a personal mission to protect, enable and encourage your team - they will love your for it, and will thrive under your leadership.
