Network Like a Boss...

bad boss career job networking Nov 15, 2023

Not being a great networker can mean the difference between landing your dream job and living happily ever after, or seeing your well connected colleague landing it (before you even knew it was available!).

And since Forbes has suggested that at least 80% of all jobs are filled through a professional network connection, it’s a pretty important skill.

But what happens when you really hate self promotion and networking?  Or you're an introvert who doesn’t want to socially network?

If the thought of begging for a job or big noting yourself to someone you’ve just met doesn't float your boat…

…it’s time to implement a simple alternative strategy.

Luckily, I have your back.

It’s all about this mindset re-frame:

Connect instead of network

Reframing networking to “connecting” was an important distinction for me.

Instead of feeling like I needed to ask for favours, beg or have awkward conversations with people, I have formed habits of “keeping in touch regularly” aka “connecting”.

And because I have a pretty hectic life and don’t have time to see many people in person anymore, the best platform to do this is LinkedIn.

Let me be clear, this type of networking is a long term strategy.

Most meaningful networking is, so I suggest you start implementing this easy peasy LinkedIn Strategy today.

Let me break it down into some tangible actions for you:

  1. When I log into LinkedIn fortnightly, I choose one person I’ve worked with in a previous role to comment on their post (keeps me on their mind).
  2. I also choose one person to write a short message to, just to say hi, share something I’ve seen online, say 'happy birthday' etc (purely to keep in touch).
  3. I always have my private “recruiter light on” on; meaning that I’m open to recruiters contacting me about roles even if I’m not job hunting (the connection is what you want for the future when you are looking).

Everyone is capable of sending a quick short message, turning on their availability in their settings and commenting on a post.

Yes, even those who identify as introverts!

This simple habit of "keeping in touch" keeps you top of mind...which is exactly where you want to be when new jobs are in the works.

Long term strategy for long term wins BUT this is what also sets you up for the fast-track at the times you need it.
