Done-For-You Networking Message Templates

application networking template Apr 19, 2024

I have started hundreds of conversations for jobs online (for myself and clients) and the one thing I NEVER DO is overthink what I write.

I keep it brief and conversational, and if they don’t reply I don’t worry about it.

Why? Because often people don't respond... they either don't look at it, are busy while they open your message, or don't know exactly what to respond with yet.

If you’re sitting at your computer, wasting time on what to write to get your new job, use these script templates to get you started.

Just don’t overthink it, just hit “send”!

Reaching out cold to a recruiter on LinkedIn letting them know you're available:

  • Hey [Recruiter's Name], I hope you don’t mind me reaching out.  I can see you’re recruiting for a few roles in [insert industry], and I’m really looking to talk to someone who loves connecting the right people to the right role (not just throwing them in anywhere!).  I’m considering a move and would love to see if we’d be a good fit working together to make that happen.   Would you be available X day at X time to have a quick chat?

Reaching out to an ex-colleague:

  • Hey [Ex-Colleague's Name]! Long time, no speak!  Hope you've been well. I was thinking about our time at [X company] and reflecting on what a great time that was [insert something specific].  Reason I’m reaching out is that I’m in the market for a new role and was wondering if I could pick your brain about some options I’m thinking of.  I really value your input and would love to bounce some ideas off you.  Would x time this week work for you?

Reaching out to an old manager:

  • Hi [Manager's Name], hope you’re well!  It's been a while since we last caught up, and I've been thinking about our time working together. Your mentorship made a real impact on me (thank you!).  Can you believe it’s been [insert years’] since we’ve worked together?  Reason I’m reaching out is that I’m in the market for a new role and was wondering if I could pick your brain about some options I’m thinking of.  I really value your input and would love to bounce some ideas off you. Would x time this week work for you?

Reaching out to the hiring manager of a role you're interested in, and you ensure a good fit before applying:

  • Hey [Hiring Manager's Name], hope this message finds you well!  I’ve been looking at [Job Title] role at [Company] and think it sounds really exciting. Based on what I’ve read, I feel I could really add a lot of value in [insert value area].  Just before I hit the apply button, would it be possible to ask you a couple of questions first?  I just want to ensure it’s a mutual match.  Are you free for a quick chat at [insert date & time]?

Here’s what will happen;

They’ll either reply with “sure thing, let’s chat”, or “can you send me an email”, or they simply won’t reply.  Either way, it's an opportunity.

Pro Tips:

  1. Focus on connections that DO reply, not the ones that don’t.
  2. Follow up a second time if you need to, say a week later, it’s ok to gently nudge / remind them you’d value their input (just keep it brief and friendly).
  3. Don’t rely on just one contact and be devastated if they don’t reply.  Send numerous messages across your network.

Do this and you’re so much closer to landing your dream job than simply submitting an application.
