Coaching worth it?

When I hear the word “coach”, I automatically think of a middle aged white guy basketball coach with a whistle and clipboard in hand.

And the humiliation of wearing bumhuggers (bloomers for my interstate friends) as basketball shorts weren’t allowed - 1992 has a lot to apologise for.

So, are “career coaches” actually worth it?

The International Coach Federation (ICF) says that 80% of people who get coaching notice an increase in their self-confidence. Plus, 73% reported better communication skills and stronger relationships.

BUT, I don’t buy it!

The reason: many so-called coaches simply aren’t trained in being a career coach that helps you find your true passion, that works outside the box, and often they don’t have enough lived experience to help you deal with it.

Often, you get the same advice you’d get if your work colleague gave you their point of view.

So, they aren’t worth it?

Wrong!

A great coach will have you see the world in a different way, they’ll position you from a place of strength, power and conviction. They’ll make you significantly more money.

You’ll find yourself in a career you were born to do, you’ll connect to your passion, and navigate incredibly efficiently into a much more senior role (if you want that).

How?

Well, they need to understand you, your passion, the things that hold you back. They need an inside knowledge on how the successful ones achieved success, and an extensive set of tools that they can easily hand to you - and they sometimes need to be downright honest with you.

That’s what makes a great coach.

BUT, I don’t recommend just anyone.
