"Today is your day"...

career career advancement job opportunity Oct 02, 2023

There’s a kids’ book (it’s a poem really) called ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go’ that I absolutely love.

It’s about opportunity, courage and consequence.

It’s a kids book, but there’s so much in it for adults too. It’s one of those ones I keep going back to.

One particular line that sticks out to me is ‘today is your day’.

I recently helped a friend of mine quit her job.

She was miserable.

The work culture was shite.  Her managers were unsupportive.  There was no career advancement.  Don’t even get me onto the fact she hadn’t had a pay rise in over 5 years!

She just needed a little bit of outside encouragement - a reminder that she didn’t have to ‘settle’.

Today was her day!

We went for a coffee in the morning and I took her picture after she decided to quit.  She looked like a different person.

Honestly her whole physicality and facial expression changed just by knowing that ‘today is your day’...the day she made a change.

She marched straight into her office that morning and quit *insert sigh of relief.

Sometimes it’s easy for us to just ‘go with the flow’ or not ‘make any waves’ in our jobs, or in our lives - cause it’s just easier. The path of least resistance…

Have you found yourself doing that?

The problem with that is complacency always results in something being ‘not quite right’. There’s no spark, no fire, no passion - nothing that makes you wanna ‘go for it’. It’s all just a bit ho-hum.

There’s a part in the poem where they talk about ‘the waiting place’ as a bit of a cautionary tale as it’s such a ‘useless’ place to be.

The fact of the matter is that nothing is going to change unless you do. My friend had been at her job for over a decade, and very little had changed for her…she was in the Waiting Place.

The great news is that change in your life starts with the smallest step of simply changing your mind. Just making the choice to say ‘enough is enough’... ‘today is your day’.

This isn’t just applicable with jobs - it can be with your relationships with people, lifestyle changes, new hobbies, travel - anything. Making the choice and exploring new terrain may seem daunting, but really, it’s just decision making.

I know people normally say ‘the diet starts Monday’, but anything can start on a Monday (or any day).

What will you decide to do with your day today?
